Are people doing the best they can?

Brene Brown tells us in her book Rising Strong, that our answer to this question says a lot about our state of mind.

I love that she tells stories on herself; studying these issues doesn’t place her above it all, she’s down there in the messy middle with the rest of us. I also love that she includes wise comments from her husband because that’s where much of my wisdom comes from too. His answer to this question was, “I don’t know. I really don’t. All I know is that my life is better when I assume that people are doing their best. It keeps me out of judgement and lets me focus on what is, and not what should or could be.”

She goes on to say that we don’t judge people when we feel good about ourselves; we look for what’s good in others. If we are thinking judgmental thoughts about everyone around us and, on the surface feeling superior, we can see it as a sign to look deeper for the real issue.
